The hair follicle possesses the ability to regenerate itself during the life of the organism. Hair growth occurs in a series of stages, beginning with the anagen (or growth) phase.

After the hair reaches a certain length and depending on the area of the body, it enters the catagen (or degradation) phase.

During the telogen (or resting) phase, a new follicle appears below the original follicle, the new hair shaft grows into the original follicle, and the old hair is removed.

Studies in humans have shown that hair growth at any given point, the majority (80% to 90%) of hair is in the anagen phase, up to 2% in the catagen phase and the remaining 10 to 20% in the telogen phase.
